YMCA aquatic programs for children
There are YMCA aquatic education programs specially designed for children from the age of six months and over. Our programs are high quality and affordable.
Children will learn water safety and swimming skills in a fun, safe small group environment.
Each year tens of thousands of children take part in YMCA aquatic education programs.
- AquaSafe Aquatic Education Program – a progressive program focusing on water safety, personal survival skills and stroke development in two main age groups:
- AquaSafe for infants and preschoolers:
Includes water familiarisation and aquatic education for both parents and children.
- AquaSafe for children 5–12 years:
A progressive seven module program offering personal development, water safety, stroke development and activities in simulated open water environments.
- Y Splash – a water safety and skill development program over five lessons in the school holidays for children aged 5-12 years.
- Aquaplay – informal water play sessions for infants and pre-school aged children and their parents or carers.
What makes the Y’s aquatic programs for children unique?
Our aquatic education programs are about much more than just learning to swim. They aim to:
- Develop personal skills as well as water safety and stroke development (swimming) skills.
- Provide opportunities for students to build a healthy body, mind and spirit.
- Provide participants with simulated experiences of open water environments (eg being caught in a rip or a current).
YMCA aquatic education teachers and lifeguards
All of our teachers are fully qualified with current AUSTSWIM and CPR certification.
YMCA Lifeguards are on site during all programs, however they do not replace parental/carer supervision of children. Parents must actively supervise children at all times and be prepared to enter the water.
Children with special needs
The YMCA offers a range of programs to cater for the individual requirements of people with special needs. Ask at your local YMCA about what’s on offer.
